As for your "if's," good thinking about the ramifications of what could happen. If you could live with worst case scenarios then go ahead. I am not sure how long you have been a best friend, but you might want to wait a little longer to see if your feelings remain after knowing him longer as a "best friend."  If they do remain, you might want to say sometime that even knowing what you do (or because you do) you could be interested in being more than a friend. That might be a way to broach the subject and see where things go if anywhere.

Why sometimes when we love someone do we go crazy? 

Love is such a high motivator we get overloaded with emotion. If you are going crazy because of love, try to step back and review things either in your mind or on paper.
